NMSA Announces 2016-2017 Fellowship Recipients

(PORTLAND, OR.) January 17, 2017 — In an effort to enhance student engagement, the Naturopathic Medical Student Association (NMSA) instituted the Fellowship Program in 2015. The NMSA is pleased to announce continuation of the program. Applications were accepted and reviewed from NMSA members throughout North America. Each fellow holds a one-year term.

Natural Doctors International (NDi) sponsors Global Health Fellowship – The NMSA awards two Global Health Fellowships annually; one to a Canadian chapter member and the other to a chapter located in the United States.

John Michael Lee (Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, Toronto ON)


He aims to encourage international engagement within the student body and develop a culture of global stewardship. He is passionate about exploring how different forms of medicine around the world can work together in unity towards better health outcomes.

Griffin McMath (Bastyr University. San Diego CA)

She is passionate about increasing awareness of naturopathic medicine on the global stage. Griffin is the first naturopathic medical student to sit as a delegate at the World Health Assembly. She remains grateful for the opportunity to unite student organizations and leaders of the naturopathic profession in setting long-term goals for change in the global health policy arena.

“I have already met with various health providers and policy makers to expand awareness, and have begun networking in our professions’ capacity to serve global populations at home (United States). These recent communications and successes have brought me great opportunities which make me hopeful to translate to our entire student population, especially to serve the immigrant and refugee populations in a federally-recognized manner” said Griffin McMath, NMSA Global Health Fellow.

BriceNPLEX sponsors Research Fellowship – Congratulations to Brice Thompson (National University of Natural Medicine, Portland OR). He is a dual-degree seeking medical student (doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine, Masters in Integrative Medical Research. Brice’s research interests include nutrition, immunology, and oncology. He is investigating complementary herbal treatments in oncology that focuses on reducing cancer cell progression. His current research project investigates the use of herbal therapies typically used to manage Type II Diabetes and applying these concepts to regulating Insulin-like growth factor signaling in neoplastic tissues.

Seroyal sponsors Integrative Medicine Fellowship – The NMSA awards two Integrative Medicine Fellowships annually.

maryMaryellen Tedeschi (Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, Toronto ON)

As the Canadian recipient of the Integrative Medicine Fellowship, Maryellen aims to act as a liaison and ambassador in integrative medical settings. She believes that integrative healthcare models combined with the inquisitive minds of students and practitioners will help integrative medicine flourish in Canada, where naturopathic medicine has yet to be fully integrated within the hospital network.

tombTom Bell (Bastyr Unviersity. Kenmore WA)

He believes the naturopathic medical student’s clinic education experience can be significant improved in an integrative setting. In addition to reviving an offsite shift at an urban Indian Health Services clinic in Seattle, he is dedicated to completing an addition 1200 hours of clinical training in conventional and naturopathic settings. He wants to see more ND students landing residences and jobs in integrative primary care clinics after they graduate.
